The Fraunhofer Institute for Computer Graphics Research IGD is the world’s leading institute for applied research in Visual Computing. The Competence Centre 3D Printing Technology was founded in 2013 and has five full-time researchers and three student research assistants. It focuses on multidisciplinary research, development and continuing education in the field of colour science, spectral-based reproduction, quality assessment, psychophysics as well as appearance modelling and processing for 2D-, 2.5D- and 3D-printing.

The Center at Fraunhofer IGD focuses on multidisciplinary research in the field of colour science, spectral-based reproduction, quality assessment, psychophysics, as well as, appearance modelling and processing for 2D-, 2.5D and 3D-printing. The facility has a running multi-spectral reproduction system which includes the HPZ3100 (12 ink) inkjet printer and is equipped with multiple colour and spectral measurement devices, viewing booths as well as the Objet500 Connex3 multi-material 3D-printer from Stratasys with full access to material positioning. Furthermore, it has access to an imaging-based goniophotometer and an instrument to measure subsurface light transport.
